Virus is Bane’s one and only apprentice. Bane’s refusal to instruct more than one student has garnered much hatred from fellow Masters, the presiding Lords of the Korriban Academy, and the Brotherhood High Council. Many within the Brotherhood felt Kaan and the Council had shown signs of great weakness. Academy Masters demanded Bane’s execution for his insurrection of the bylaws, but Kaan overruled their demands, and gave strict orders to leave Bane to him. In secrecy, Kaan allowed it for only one reason - Bane’s unique gift, his exceptional asset, which has been kept hidden to all but a few of Kaan’s closest aids. Masters of the Korriban Academy were required to train multiple students in order to bolster their ranks for the approaching war, but Bane’s exception created a great rift within the Brotherhood, and many looked upon Bane as an outcast, and paid him little or no attention. The same held true for his apprentice. Although Kaan allowed the request, the Council forbade Bane and his student from the normal training regiments, and access to the academy library. Nor were they allowed to train upon academy facilities. In addition, the Brotherhood Council Members ordered Bane to step down as the presiding Captain of the Black Guard. Lord Kaan initially refuted the council’s demands, but ultimately the concession was made.

Virus believes in Bane and his visions of rebuilding the Order. She continually goads him to leave Kaan and the Brotherhood. Bane continually refuses her. This conflict between them has hindered their relationship and in effect, Virus has given him an ultimatum. Bane feels deep within him that Virus harbors great potential and thus holds her upon a high pedestal. Bane had sensed it even when she was a child of three years, when he found her parentless on the planet Circarpous IV. He has devoted himself to her and her training since. Virus uses this knowledge, and at times takes advantage of it to obtain her goals. Bane worships her, and believes that she will become even more powerful than he. Bane truly believes that one day she is destined play a vital role in the fate of the galaxy. He dwells on this often, meditating, and searching for an alternative path to his horrendous visions.
